The Way Out – Who Am I?
For forty years Moses lived in the wilderness as a shepherd. Day after day he moved flocks across the desert, part of a nomadic family with no clear future ahead. They were silent years.
He must have wondered: I’m never going back to Egypt. This is it. All the education in Egypt for nothing. My compassion and desire to help my people will never come back around.
But then—God interrupted the ordinary.
The Burning Bush
One day, while leading the flock near Horeb, the mountain of God, Moses noticed a bush on fire. Maybe it was the heat. Maybe lightning. But this bush wasn’t burning up.
As Moses moved closer, the angel of the Lord appeared in the flames. And then God spoke:
“Moses! Moses!”
“Here I am,” Moses replied.
“Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
Afraid, Moses hid his face. His passion for justice had given way to years of quiet shepherding, and now—exposed, guilty, abandoned—he encountered the living God.
God’s Heart Revealed
Exodus 3:7–10 gives us God’s heart:
“I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out … and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them … So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”
God sees pain. He hears prayers. And He chooses ordinary people—like Moses—to be part of His rescue plan.
“Who Am I?”
Moses pushed back:
“Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” (Ex. 3:11)
It’s a natural response. We ask the same questions in our everyday callings:
- Who am I to serve?
-Who am I to join in?
-Who am I to share my faith when I don’t have it all together?
But God’s calling is always an invitation to worship. Serving Him is a privilege.
God’s Answer
God’s response is simple:
“I will be with you.” (Ex. 3:12)
His presence is His promise. The fire burned but did not consume. His full glory was veiled, yet His nearness was undeniable.
God’s Name Revealed
When Moses asked God’s name, the Lord answered:
“I AM WHO I AM.” (Ex. 3:14)
This name declares God’s nature:
-Personal → not a force, but Friend.
-Self-existent → “I AM THAT I AM.”
-Unchanging → “I AM WHO I AM.”
As A.W. Tozer once wrote, “To admit that there is One who lies beyond us … requires humility. Yet how He eludes us! For He is everywhere while He is nowhere.”
What This Means
-Our worship adds nothing—God is already glorious.
-Serving Him is privilege, not duty.
-God is trustworthy → unchanging.
-God is inescapable → He will not go away.
God’s Promise in Jesus
To Moses God said, “I will be with you.” To His disciples Jesus said, “I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”(Matt. 28:20)
Jesus is the Great I AM in flesh. The Greater Moses. Our Deliverer. Perfectly obedient, where we are weak. Our confidence rests in Him.
So when you ask, Who am I? The answer is this:
I AM HIS. Therefore: Yes, God. I will trust You.
